Proxy Glossary

46 proxy and networking terms explained in plain language.

A

Anonymous Proxy

A proxy that hides your real IP address from the destination server without revealing itself as a proxy.

ASN (Autonomous System Number)

A unique identifier assigned to a group of IP networks operated by a single organization, used to identify the owner of IP blocks.

B

Backconnect Proxy

A proxy gateway that automatically rotates through a pool of IPs on each connection, accessed via a single endpoint.

Bandwidth

The amount of data transferred through a proxy connection, usually measured in GB. Some proxy types charge per GB used.

C

CGNAT

Carrier-Grade NAT — a technique where multiple users share the same public IP address. Residential proxies often use CGNAT IPs.

Concurrent Sessions

The number of simultaneous proxy connections running at the same time. Higher concurrency allows faster data collection.

D

Datacenter Proxy

A proxy IP hosted in a commercial data center rather than on a residential ISP connection. Fast and cheap, but more easily detected.

Dedicated Proxy

A proxy IP assigned exclusively to one user, not shared with anyone else. Ensures a clean IP history.

DNS Leak

When DNS requests bypass the proxy and reveal your real IP or location to DNS servers despite using a proxy.

E

Elite Proxy

A proxy that completely hides the fact that a proxy is being used. No proxy-related headers are forwarded.

Endpoint

The proxy server address (hostname:port) used to route your connection through the proxy network.

Exit Node

The final server through which your traffic exits to the internet. In residential proxies, this is the real user's device.

F

Fingerprinting

Techniques websites use to identify users beyond IP address, including browser, OS, screen resolution, and behavioral patterns.

Forward Proxy

A proxy that sits between the client and the internet, forwarding client requests to external servers on the client's behalf.

G

Gateway

An intermediary server that routes network traffic between your client and the target website.

Geo-targeting

The ability to select proxies from a specific country, state, or city to simulate browsing from that location.

H

HTTP Proxy

A proxy that handles HTTP and HTTPS traffic. The most common proxy type, supported by virtually all applications.

HTTPS Proxy

An HTTP proxy with SSL/TLS tunneling (CONNECT method), allowing encrypted HTTPS traffic to pass through the proxy.

I

IP Address

A unique numerical label assigned to each device on a network. Proxies replace your real IP with a different address.

IP Blacklist

A list of IP addresses blocked by websites or services due to spam, abuse, or suspicious activity.

IP Pool

The total collection of IP addresses available in a proxy service. Larger pools reduce the chance of re-using the same IP.

IP Rotation

The process of automatically changing the proxy IP address at defined intervals or on each new request.

ISP Proxy

A proxy with an IP address assigned by a real Internet Service Provider, combining datacenter speed with residential trust levels.

L

Latency

The time delay (measured in milliseconds) between sending a request through a proxy and receiving a response.

M

Mobile Proxy

A proxy that uses IP addresses assigned to mobile carrier networks (4G/5G). Extremely difficult to detect and block.

P

Proxy Authentication

The process of verifying user identity before granting proxy access, using username/password or IP whitelisting.

Proxy Chain

Routing traffic through multiple proxy servers in sequence, adding layers of anonymity but increasing latency.

Proxy Pool

A collection of proxy IPs managed by a provider, from which individual IPs are assigned to users.

Proxy Rotation

Automatically switching between different proxy IPs to distribute requests and avoid detection or rate limiting.

R

Rate Limiting

A server-side restriction that limits how many requests an IP can make within a time period. Proxies help circumvent this.

Residential Proxy

A proxy IP address assigned by a real ISP to a real home device. Appears indistinguishable from organic web traffic.

Rotating Proxy

A proxy that assigns a different IP address on every request or at configurable time intervals from a pool.

S

Session

A single proxy connection or a series of requests using the same IP. Can be sticky (persistent) or rotating (changing).

SOCKS4

An older proxy protocol supporting TCP connections only, without authentication or UDP support.

SOCKS5

The most feature-rich proxy protocol, supporting TCP, UDP, IPv6, and username/password authentication.

Sticky Session

A proxy configuration where the same IP is maintained for a defined duration, useful for logging in or multi-step tasks.

Static Proxy

A proxy with a fixed IP that never changes, assigned exclusively to one user. Also called a dedicated proxy.

Subnet

A range of IP addresses sharing the same network prefix. Multiple proxies from the same subnet may appear related to websites.

T

Throughput

The actual data transfer speed achieved through a proxy connection, affected by server load and network conditions.

Transparent Proxy

A proxy that does not hide its existence and passes the original client IP in request headers. Lowest anonymity level.

Tunnel Proxy

A proxy that creates an encrypted tunnel between client and proxy server for secure traffic forwarding.

U

UDP

User Datagram Protocol — a connection-less network protocol used by games, VoIP, and DNS. Supported by SOCKS5 proxies.

Uptime

The percentage of time a proxy service is operational and available. Proxya guarantees 99.9% uptime.

User Agent

A string sent by HTTP clients identifying the browser and OS. Often needs to match the proxy location for believability.

W

Whitelisting

Allowing specific IPs to access proxy endpoints without username/password authentication.

X

X-Forwarded-For

An HTTP header that reveals the original client IP when using a transparent proxy. Elite proxies suppress this header.
