Apps and devices

Setting a proxy in a browser, in Windows or macOS, in Proxifier, on an iPhone or Android phone, and in Telegram. Built-in system settings are limited, so for SOCKS5 with a password you usually need an app.

Chrome: the Proxya extension#

The Proxya extension switches Chrome between proxies and handles the password for you. Chrome on its own uses the system proxy and has no fields for credentials.

Firefox#

  1. Settings, Network Settings, Settings…

  2. Manual proxy configuration

Enter the host and port in HTTP Proxy and tick Also use this proxy for HTTPS.

  3. Open any site

Firefox asks for the username and password once per session.

Firefox's SOCKS fields take no password, so with password authentication use the HTTP port.

Windows#

Settings, Network and internet, Proxy, Manual proxy setup: enter the host and port and save. Windows has no fields for a password: browsers ask for it on the first request, and programs that ignore the system proxy are not affected. For SOCKS5, a password and per-app control use Proxifier.

macOS#

System Settings, Network, choose the connection, Details, Proxies. Turn on Web proxy (HTTP) and Secure web proxy (HTTPS), enter the host and port in both, switch on Proxy server requires password and enter the credentials.

Proxifier#

Proxifier routes any program through a proxy, including programs with no proxy settings of their own, on Windows and macOS.

  1. Profile, Proxy Servers, Add

Enter the host and port. For an HTTP port choose protocol HTTPS, for a SOCKS5 port choose SOCKS Version 5.

  2. Enable authentication

Enter the username and password, then press Check to test.

  3. Profile, Proxification Rules

Choose which programs go through the proxy. Leave the rest on Direct.

iPhone and iPad#

Settings, Wi-Fi, tap the network, Configure Proxy, Manual: server, port, and Authentication with username and password. This covers HTTP only, only that Wi-Fi network, and only apps that respect the system proxy.

For SOCKS5, for mobile data, or for the whole phone, use an app that runs a local VPN. We suggest Potatso, which can also route a single app.

Android#

Wi-Fi settings on Android take a host and port but no password. For a proxy with a password use an app that accepts socks:// links, such as v2rayNG or Hiddify: open the QR code of a proxy on the order page and scan it from the app.

Telegram with an ISP or datacenter proxy#

In Telegram open Settings, Data and Storage, Proxy, Add proxy, choose SOCKS5 and enter the IP, the SOCKS5 port (the HTTP port plus one), the username and the password. For Telegram alone, an MTProto proxy is simpler.

WhatsApp#

WhatsApp does not accept ordinary proxies: its proxy field expects a special server of its own, so an ISP or datacenter line comes back as invalid. Route the whole phone instead: Potatso on iOS, or a VLESS, OpenVPN or WireGuard config from a mobile order.
